Years ago, I was lucky enough to stumble across a recipe for cranberry chutney on Pinterest. Over time the recipe has changed, I now omit some ingredients and add others. This chutney has become a tasty staple at my family’s Thanksgiving table.
The best part of finding the recipe was establishing the tradition of making it with my niece Amaya every year. She has grown from a beautiful bright-eyed baby girl to a talented and compassionate teen. If you have teens in your life, you know the words cool and adult aren’t usually associated with one another. Lucky for me, I get to be the crafty cook aunt instead of the “cool” one.
Here’s what you’ll need:
This probably seems like a lot, because it is! I’m making enough for Thanksgiving at my mom’s house, my uncle’s dinner, gifts for aunts and a Friendsgiving dinner I’ll be hosting on Black Friday. Amaya and I package our chutney in mini mason jars and give it to the aunts as gifts because they love it so much.
The hardest part of making this recipe is prepping all of the ingredients. Be sure to get all of your chopping and dicing out of the way before you start cooking so you have a smooth cooking process.
After that, it’s really simple.
Step 1: Put sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves and cranberries in a large pot with water. Sometimes I swap half the water for orange juice. It’s delicious either way. Cook over medium heat until the cranberries burst, stirring regularly.
Step 2: Add all the other ingredients. Reduce heat to medium/low. Allow moisture to reduce so the chutney thickens.
Step 3: Once the desired consistency is achieved, transfer from pot into cute mason jars and serving dishes.
This recipe is great because you can make it several days in advance.
Try it out! Let me know what you think. Trust me, once you go chutney, you’ll never go back to the wiggly red canned stuff. By the way…You’re welcome!
